The story of this original Avernum is the following: you have been forced to live in the underground, condemned to never seeing the sun again, a life in the dark. As if that wasn`t enough, you are surrounded by monsters, internal wars and thousands of prisoners. But you refuse to accept your fate, and start to fight to end injustice in order to return to the surface and fight against tyrany.

So, your fist mission in Avernum is to escape; then you need to access the outside; finally you need to confront the evil and cruel Emperor Hawthorne.
